finished in 1767

Hight of the ridge turret:

A huge chandelier from 1695  hangs from the high, white washed barrel vaulting.

The pulpit faces the east and dates back to the time when the church was built in 1767. The front of the original organ and the painted wooden baptismal angel which hangs from the barrel vaulting  both date back to this time. The fist organ was built by the organ builder Johann Heinrich Mittelhäuser.

The church of Breitenberg was formally consecrated on  August 7, 1768. On the original hand writing of the inauguration music somebody wrote: “Kapellmeister Telemann”. Experts are not sure if that means that Georg Philipp Telemann is the composer. Maybe it’s a co.-composition from the Old Georg Phipp with his Grandson. The handwriting is now in the “Nordelbisches Kirchen - Archiv in Kiel/Germany.

The architect of the church

Wilhelm Bardewick, the builder of this church, was a student of Georg Sonnin ( builder of the St. Michaelis Church in Hamburg). He worked as a royal inspector in Glückstadt and wrote expert opinions about the restoration of the church in Wilster, which Georg Sonnin then rebuilt. Bardewick was the architect of the church in Horst as well. It is a matter of dispute whether the rebuilding of the castle Heiligenstedt can be attributed to him as well.
